One of the most important products for commercialization is cerium oxide powder used for polishing. This powder is usually pale and whitish or yellowish in colour. Its main use is to polish. Its good properties had made it to gain a position in place of other metal oxides which were previously used for polishing. Those metal oxides were zirconia and iron.

When a glass needs to be decolorized, it is the cerium oxide polishing powder which is used. The chemical properties of this powder help to turn the impurities of iron that are green in colour to turn colorless. This powder is mainly used to remove strain marks and scratches. It is a good dissolving agent in water.

The procedure of using cerium oxide polishing powder

  • The powder shall not be entirely wet but shall be damped. The powder shall be made into a paste and then needs to be applied on the affected glass.
  • A wooden stick or an iron rod is needed to mix up the powder by adding in water on regular intervals. This will give the perfect consistency of the mixture.
  • The surface of the glass shall be clean. There shall not be any grime or cost left on the surface.
  • Make sure that the paste is not too runny.
  • This is followed by the application of the paste on the surface of the glass. The glass shall be left till the excess paste gets accumulated in a tub.
  • The next step is to knead the paste on the area which is affected.

Cautions to be followed while using the powder

  • There may be an existence of crack if the glass surface is kneaded when the paste is dry.
  • The glass needs to be wiped off when the cerium oxide polishing powder paste dries out.
